Check this out. Not my own idea but a good start. Original contributions are the window sealant adhering to the box and the Sanford perm marker coloring of the originally blue lid. Funny huh?

I guess you answered my question about the bean hopper. Very creative, you should make and sell them. Kevin

BOBPAULE,
Nice MazzerMiniMiniHopper.  If your tamper can slide down inside the MiniHopper it would reduce the "popcorn" effect.  A Vivace Ergo tamper 58mm weight would be equivalent ~260 grams load of beans.

I have a slight 'twist' to this idea that I just did on my mini and it's EASY, cost $10, and retains the look of a Mini, with a smaller hopper.

First, let me say that my mini fits under my cabinets unmodified with about 2-3" clearance.  However, my problem was that I always had to move the grinder out from under the cabinet whenever I loaded beans, which was just about daily.

I looked for suitable smaller hoppers to no avail.

Here's what I did:

- Cut the top 3.25 inches (important) off my existing hopper by carefully sawing through it with a hack saw...I know it sounds bad, but hear me out!
- Carefully 'cleaned' up the edge of the plastic that I cut to smooth it out and make it look 'manufactured'.  I used a metal file, and a sand block with 100 grit, followed by 150 grit sandpaper.
- Now for a lid.  I went to Espressoparts.com and ordered a new lid for the DOSER for $10.  It fits perfectly onto the 'cut-off' hopper.  It also 'matches' the grinder because it is exactly the same as the lid on the doser.

The advantage here is that it looks GREAT.  It looks like a Mazzer Mini that has a special super small hopper.  It holds about 1/2 pound of beans.  And most importantly, I have room to pour beans in the grinder without having to move it around every day.

I'd post a picture but I haven't figured out how to put digital photos on my computer yet (I'm a financial guy, not a computer guy).  However, if you take a look at your Mini's and just imagine it with a shorter hopper, that's it.  I LOVE IT!

Brilliant! There's been a lot of talk about sawing off the top of the hopper on alt.coffee, but the idea always foundered on finding a decent looking lid. Nobody thought of sawing off the hopper so a second doser lid fits it. As with all good ideas, it's obvious in hindsight.

Based on your descriptions of what to chop, I made a mockup in Photoshop for those who might like to see how it would look...

You got it!  That's exactly how it looks!  Now I don't even need to figure out how to post pictures from my digital camera!

Thanks a lot.

I did my Mazzer mods with a dremmel type device freehand, it's actually not very difficult at all as long as you keep your concentration!
