I HAVE TO answer totally false statements : it is not true that thermoblock machines are NOT adequate to make great espresso, (after all the HX is an application of thermoblock technology)

I understand your argument that there are other technologies out there and that the situation is not so simply black and white. Having said that, you must acknowledge that this is a discussion about low cost espresso machines presently on the market, not about other directions technology may head in the future. To attempt to differentiate low cost thermoblock machines to a beginner and describe conventional HX machines as just another type of thermoblock is just plain misleading. How did you manage to make this statement without acknowledging that HX machines in fact have a boiler - typically a fairly large one for temperature stability and steaming capacity? It will be difficult to have a useful and informative discussion unless we all use the same terms.

I would say
cappuccinoboy aka Pietro Cicchetti is not a Professional but an Expert when it comes to espresso machines...

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/EP0801922.pdf
I had read he had a patent so I looked it up :)

I think I understood what Pietro was saying..
I spent most of my life as a Model Marker/ Prototype Machinist ..

Model Makers were used to make models of patents before standards where made in drafting and every patent applacation needed a model so Patent Office was sure to understand patent prints...

Peace

And why is it that Breville owners ALWAYS find this site AFTER they purchase the machine?  I must admit, I was one of the foolish but have since moved on...

Though this may be TIC, I think the answer is this:  buying a Breville is like buying an automatic drip coffeemaker, a toaster, or a hand mixer -- it's an appliance (a very good-looking one at that), and it's sold in stores (in the US) like Macy's and Neiman-Marcus, Bed Bath & Beyond and Williams-Sonoma, and Amazon -- none of which specialize in "serious" espresso equipment.  And once the Breville fails to perform, the natural human assumption is that it must be "me" who's doing something wrong and it is only then that the buyer seeks out advice online.

Look at it this way, if they already were "serious" about espresso, they probably would have found this site long before purchasing the Breville.

Just my 2¢/humble opinion . . . YMMV.

Cheers,
Jason

+1

If you were looking to really get into espresso, you come online, as all of us do.. find the crazies(us), and do the research.  You dont just make an impulse buy at Macys.

Well I think the urge for toaster/appliance companies to cash in on the market is why we see a huge amount of these machines.
Everyone wants a piece of the pie. Irregardless of wether or not they actually work.
Ignorance is bliss and many people each day stroll into one of a dozen retailers selling machines like this and the unsuspecting customer buys it hook line and sinker.
Heck I went to Willams and Sonoma and the guy had me thinking the Breville 800 was a great machine. I even drank some.
I thought it was a high end thermoblock machine and I thought the Aussies were just making a great lower priced machine. Luckily they took it back no questions. Now Breville seems to have caught on and they are offering a real basket, and still its junk, that was just  damage control.
That was two years ago and I got what I think is the starting point for machines...my Gaggia Classic.I am glad people here dont really get intimidated and cared enough to tell me the truth.
Maybe in the future someone will actually test the Breville and send the results to the main head quarters so they can fix the machine.
Compared to the Gaggia its a toy.But Whole Latte Love and Seattle Coffee Gear selling them??????? Wow I never would have thought so.
