Using the Krups bean crusher with a non-pressurized portafilter will give you worse results than you're getting now. (Been there! Done that! Took me about a day of that to decide to scrape up some money to order a real grinder.)
Buy a respectable grinder now, put the rest in a certificate of deposit or other withdrawal-restricted interest bearing account so you're not tempted to spend that money on the mundane stuff. In 3 months, get the machine.
This upgrade path will improve your coffee now and in the future.
Or... ignore the advice, like so many others, and wonder why the new machine just isn't performing. ;)

I get it. Sometimes, you need to make compromises to keep out of the "doghouse". This sounds like one of those compromises. Since you have the go ahead for a 4 digit machine purchase, you want to make the purchase now, while you have the money.

I understand completely. I was actually considering that I would more likely not use the new machine immediately, though I guess I waste a few months of warranty going that route too.
Either way, I need to update both and will do so... I understand and agree that the grinder is more important, it's just a matter of spending the money in the most efficient manner. Not sure what that really means yet or how this will play out.

Pick up a hand grinder to hold you over until you can get a Vario. I'm not 100% positive, but I think even a cheap Hario Skerton would let you get some drinkable shots out of the new machine. Better than the old set up at least!
I should give my skerton a try with the Brewtus next time I am bored. It got stuck on aeropress duty at work.
