Hi All , I would like to share my modification on the Gaggia MDF. I have it since 3 years now. I am quite satistfied with the grind quality of the machine but between two steps the difference is huge. Hence making it quite difficult to get the optimum grind for a specific coffee. I did not want to throw away the grinder as I felt I would need just 3-4 more steps in between so I decided to modify it.
Pictures say much actually. So I will not explain in detail what I did. The red metal is the ring cut from the cap of an Illy can. the metal is thin enough so it is very easy to get this ring. It is necessary to have the pushs from the springs hidden in that black capsules - this ensures a uniform grind. The rubber is necessary to push the metal stopper onto the adjustment wheel, as it rotates during grinding. Between two 'valleys' I have now about 5-6 steps which are for my need more than enough. Dremmel has managed these cuts. I am using this now since 3 -4 days. It made a huge difference in the brewing procedure. Now I can really keep my tamping constant and play with the grind.
I can not put back the fron plastic cover anymore but I do not need it.
Gaggia MDF being a good grinder to be thrown away from the window - I was close to it has got another chance now :) Ciao ... Akin
