I just bought a used (1999 model) Gaggia Espresso off ebay and I need some help because it isn't working.
When I first plugged it in last night and ran a few shots through it, there were some issues with small streams of water shooting in odd directions out of the shower screen, but besides that, water seemed to be coming through okay.
I pulled about 4 shots trying to get the grind/dose levels right, and then I tested out the steam wand, which seemed to be working fine.
After using the steam wand I took out the portafilter (big mistake, coffee sprayed everywhere, obviously no solenoid valve in this model...).
I then cleaned the mess, turned the machine off and went to bed.
Next morning, I turned it on, left it heating up for about 30 mins, then came to make myself a coffee. Trouble was, water wouldn't come out of the group head, except for a few measly drops. It sounds like the pump is working, but no water coming through.
So I took off the shower screen and cleaned it. Still no water.
Anybody have any ideas what the problem could be and if so, how to fix it?

Remove the shower screen, then remove the group head. Under the group head, there is the group valve, remove it also. Disassemble the group valve and inside there is a small spring and a ball. Clean the spring and ball, then push a straightened paper clip up through where the group valve screws on to the bottom of the boiler. Chances are a bit of scale has clogged the small hole there. Put it all back together and I bet you'll have water flowing again.

I had the same thing happen to my Carezza that sat dormant for a long time. Water wouldn't come out of the brew head. I ran a descaling cycle through the machine (using Dezcal or similar). I was actually quite surprised when it worked perfectly after that.
It's worth a shot if you don't want to take the machine apart.
Not sure if your Gaggia is the same as mine but all it takes to remove the screen is a philips screw driver, and an allen wrench for the head.

I own the Gaggia Espresso Pure. I was having the exact same problem. I know this response is quite a few months late but I have figured out (via the manual) how to fix the problem without much effort. All you need to do is fill your machine with water and let it warm. First, put a cup under your steam wand and turn the steam dial to let steam out, do this for about 20/30 seconds. Then...while the water is still shooting out of the steam wand press your espresso brew button (you should now see a steady water stream coming out of the steam wand)....then turn the steam wand knob off...this will shoot water out of the the brewer head (because it increases pressure). Now you're all done!!!! .....worked for me!!!!!!! Good luck :)
