Posted Thu Mar 22, 2012, 10:50am Subject: Saeco Odea Go & Syntia grind is too coarse
I just bought a new Odea Go to put on my boat for weekend use. My friend bought a used Syntia machine to use at home. Both machines have the same problem, so I wonder if there's a design issue or we just coincidentally got two bad machines. Both of them grind too coarse, as evidenced by how fast the espresso runs out of it. A 1-ounce shot takes about 8 seconds to come out, way too fast.
On the Syntia there are no pucks to speak of; the ejected coffee varies from a puckish blob on occasion to mostly just a pile of moist coffee. The resulting coffee isn't terrible, but thin. On the Odea I do get a puck for the most part. Coffee quality is a little better than the Syntia, but not quite right.
I called Saeco and she said that the grinder is not serviceable and not adjustable. She couldn't/wouldn't say if this was a company line or really true. Went through a lot of troubleshooting stuff and got nowhere (all things I'd already tested/done). Bottom line was, "well return them and try another one."
Before I do that (and my friend can't return his since it's used) I figured I'd see if there is any wisdom on this topic here. Is the ceramic grinder truly non-adjustable, or can I do something internally? I have a Saeco Royal Digital Plus with 12k shots through it, so I've adjusted its burr grinder several times internally. Saeco told me the ceramic is totally different.
