Technically, part of Gaggia was bought by Saeco who was in turn bought by Philips. Not sure if that has affected production yet though.

Still, looking for an other brand of machine doesn't seems a bad idea to me...just in case...

The Lelit PL41 is good machine that will fit your budget. They are comparable to the Gaggia/Rancilio SBDU machines.

Looking at different machine, in the 300 to 500$ price range, nothing is really worth it. Not the best material for some parts ( (is copper that much more expensive than ss or aluminum?), too much plastic, no 3 way valve. It always amaze me to see that no company have a good look at what is on the market, take the best of each and design one. It is not a matter of cost more than marketing. Maybe i should start a company (but i'm no good at that). Anyway, i decided to give another try to the BES830XL after 2 that were DOA. Third one is working. Only made 2 shots and it was ok. That was with Lavazza ground coffee. I have a Baratza grinder so that should be sufficient for the Breville. And the Breville came with single and double wall filters. 300$ for the BES830XL (450 elsewhere) with the Costco warranty. It should satisfy me for the next 2-3 years, then i will go for something in the 1k$ price range. I'll comeback giving a feedback about the BEX830XL... (must be a few buying this machine every Costco has a skid in stock)

The people who frequent this site and HB have to be a minority. Most people have never been into an espresso only retail store or don't know that they can make real espresso at home. I know lots of people who have some of the best espresso in Montreal on a regular basis, but settle for pre-ground coffee in a pressurized PF made on a 150$ Breville at home (I used to be one of them:)). Unfortunately 300-400$ here in Canada doesn't get you much. It's a different story south of the border.

Will be there in April (Vermont) and in June (South Carolina). Is there any machine that would fit my budget ?

AFAIK there aren't any espresso shops in Burlington, VT but I could be wrong. I have no idea about South Carolina. You could always look into one of those border shipping places that allow you to purchase online from the US and you pick it up on your way back. Best deal south of the border has to be the Gaggia Classic, which can be found for ~350-400$ in the US while it retails for 600$ here.

Sent an email to that person but no answer back.....

The Gaggia Classic is 300€ in France (Click Here (www.maxicoffee.com)) wich is these days around 400$ CDN. At 400, that would be a GO FOR IT!
