My question about Pre-infusion is about the bit that drips out. In an E-61 the pre-infusion is at such a low pressure it doesn't do that, but a CC1 it does. Should that bit be going into the drip tray or into the cup?

I can't stand the thought of wasting the first bit that comes out, seems like that part would have the most concentrated coffee flavor. It's been a while since I've experimented with the pre-infusion, seeing no need for it as the CC1 makes great coffee without it. Now that I know more about what I'm doing, I'll mess around with it a bit. To avoid that predrip from the preinfusion, try letting the pump run for only 1 second, and let it sit a couple more seconds after that. We should do a test to see if 1 second pre is enough to fully saturate the puck. I will try setting it to 1 sec pre, 3 sec wait, and I will end the pull before the pump kicks in again. My initial expectation is that this will thoroughly saturate the puck.

hmm, I don't get any drip with less than 3 or 4 seconds of the pump on. But I grind pretty fine, to end up with just 2 - 2.5oz (w crema) in < 30 seconds.

I don't remember which machine it was but yesterday I was reading where one of the machines that uses pre-infusion does so at 4 bar pressure. May or may not be inciteful as an answer...

Found this thread while reading about pre infusion, and since I have the same setup as grant and ampguy just thought I would add my experience for future reference. For our daily blend Intelli BC, the settings on my CC1 are 4sec PI, 2sec wait, and 26sec brew. I just start to see beading from the naked portafilter right after pre infusion, followed by a drip or two into the cup before brew cycle starts pulling the shot. At the end of the 26sec I have 28g in the cup from a 17g dose using a Strada/VST double basket. The setting range is 0-15sec for PI, 0-5sec wait, and 20-100sec for brew according to the manual. If pre infusion is set below 5sec I assume that the pump doesn't get a chance to get to full pressure anyways but not sure if something more fancy is happening under the hood like pump voltage control to prevent full pressure, or if just pump is switching on and off for the specified amount of time during pre infusion.

Sorry, just found this thread. On the CC1 the pump does not vary in flow rate or pressure. When preinfusion starts the pump is on. The pressure inside the portafilter takes several seconds to build to full pressure. So, if you have a pre-infusion of 4 seconds and a delay of 6 seconds, pump and 3 way valve turn on for 4 seconds, then the pump turns off for 6 seconds (3 way valve remains "on"), then the pump turns back on for the duration of the set time. The Set Total Brew Time will remain the same regardless of what values are set for Pre-infusion and delay time. Bill

Thanks Bill for the clarification, it's always nice to have direct feedback from the machine's designer! So if the pump is starting up the same at initial preinfusion as well as full brew, I will probably try targeting a slightly longer overall shot time since it looks like the pump ramps again upon start up of the brew stage. This is good to know so I can adjust accordingly when dialing in starting from roasters recommended brew settings.

I generally have mine set to 1 second preinfusion, and 3 second wait. I've played with different settings, and don't really notice any taste difference. Don't know how SCG noticed such big differences using the settings, as a 4 second preinfusion with 0 wait time like they did would be no different than 0 for both and just running the machine normally.... unless maybe I'm missing something and when there is a setting used for preinfusion something else is going on (like the 3 way being open for those 4 seconds and then closing after 4 so with a 0 wait time it starts brewing right after the valve closes?) Maybe Bill can clarify... either way, machine makes awesome coffee, love mine. Need to get an auto timer for it so when I do get up it's ready, vs getting up and turning on and waiting to get the machine fully warmed up. Looking at the puck sometimes after, it seems to resemble a slightly convex shape after pulling a shot, thinking a convex tamper would be a bit better than a flat for this machine.

Actually my pucks come out pretty flat, slightly expanded with a small impression from the dispersion screen screw. Might be because my initial dose and level is slightly concave to begin with before my tamp, using a Strada VST 17g basket with a flat 58.3mm tamper.
