My Breville dual boiler is set at 10.5 bar blind and pulls a shot at 9.8 bar. I called Breville customer support and I was told that my machine's OPV pressure was set at the factory and does not need adjustment. I read elsewhere that I could vary the pressure during the shot by opening the hot water valve sligthly.. It works well and I can test a shot at any pressure I desire. I pulled a shot and brought the pressure down to 9 bar and the shot tasted sweet! I am considering adjusting the OPV valve, but I do not want to void the warranty. Would Breville know if I opened the machine?
I should have mentioned in my previous post to all those who are concerned if their pressure is set too high or low on the breville, you can use the hot water valve to test pressures ( only if your machine is set high to begin with). The hot water valve bleeds water from the brew boiler. When you first open the valve you can vary the pressure during your shot pull with very small turns on the knob. The pump will not engage until you open the valve more. This allows you to test your machine at any pressure between 8 to 10 bars easily. Very little water comes out of the hot water nozzle, I just let it fall into the drip tray. This will answer your questions as to whether you should set your OPV valve to a different pressure. This is a great undocumented feature on the Breville.
One other trick .. changing the portafilter spring...
I found that if you want to try other ridged filter baskets and they are too tight to snap into the portafilter, if you replace the breville portafilter spring with a rancilio portafilter spring, all ridged filter baskets will snap in and out easily. I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding the merits of various baskets, I only offer this if you wish to try different ridged baskets. You can find the spring using a google search.
So, if your machine goes past 9 bar when pulling a shot, then it is an OPV issue/mis-calibration? My machine begins with 1149... I thought breville fixed the opv issue starting with 1144 serials?
when i talked to breville customer support, they indicated that a pressure between 8 to 10 during pulling a shot was acceptable. Even though my machine blinded at 10.5, it still pulled a shot under 10 bar. It was set at the factory, my serial number was checked

Would the rancilio spring keep the stock basket in place, but make it easier to remove it? I've waffled between spring in (less messy clean up) and spring out (easier removal/loading of basket) a couple of times.

yes, it would, but it seems under normal circumstances, the blind pressure is about 0.5 bar above the extraction pressure. ( i weight out 19 grams, tamp at 30 lb (espro tamp) and grind to pull 2 oz at about 25 seconds, although I usually cut the shot short once blonding becomes prevalent.
