yes, it would, but it seems under normal circumstances, the blind pressure is about 0.5 bar above the extraction pressure. ( i weight out 19 grams, tamp at 30 lb (espro tamp) and grind to pull 2 oz at about 25 seconds, although I usually cut the shot short once blonding becomes prevalent.

I hate to bring the topic of baskets back up, but are you using the breville stock double basket? I only ask because I find it difficult to grind, evenly distribute and tamp more than 17.5g. I am able to extract 1.5-2oz by the time the shot clock hits 35 seconds. If it helps, I recently bought the naked portafilter and am noticing significant channeling, which I am working on fixing with every shot.

I am using a VST 18 gram ridged basket.  I just adjusted my OPV valve  My blind pressure was  10.5, and I was pulling a shot at 9.8.  My new blind pressure is about 9.7 and I am pulling a shot at about 9.4 bar.
My temp is set to 200 degrees F. I just ground 19 grams of Kean coffee, tamped to 30 lb with my curved Espro tamp, I have the machine set at 5 seconds preinfusion and 70 % pre infusion pressure.  My grind is a little fine and I pulled about 1 oz only before blonding.  I was not paying attention to the shot clock on that pull....
It was only one oz or so.., but it was thick, rich, sweet, I.E a GOD shot !.  The best shot I have pulled from the machine so far.   I am loving this machine.....

I think I will try some Black Cat espresso from intelligensia next......

Life is good... happy early fathers day to me....

Just got one of these from Amazon -- serial number 1150. Shots are pulling at around 10 BAR, blind filter is around 10.25 BAR. Is this okay? Or should I call Breville? Or adjust it myself? Obviously after spending $$$$ on this thing I want to make sure it's working as well as it's supposed to.

You are probably OK. The nice thing about the Breville is you can adjust the pressure by opening the hot water valve as you are extracting. Doing this, you have complete control over the extraction pressure. I keep my OPV at 10 bar or so so I can use the hot water tap to fully control the shot.

After a while, you can decide if you want to adjust the OPV. It's pretty simple.

My Breville machine which I recently purchased from sur al table also has a serial number beginning with 1150.  It was pulling a shot at about 9.8 and blinding at 10.5.  It seems Breville decided to set the machines at the factory to pull a shot at around 10 bar.  I called Breville to have their service center adjust the OPV valve to a lower pressure ( to preserve my warranty) and they declined to do so telling me that it was set at the factory and that the shot pull pressure was in an acceptable range.  I then played with the pressure using the hot water valve during the shot pulls and decided to adjust the OPV valve to deliver a shot between 9.0 to 9.5  ( it is set at about 9.3).  My shots are sweeter and thicker now.
I hope I will still get service under warranty if I ever need it.  Luckily there is no seal on the machine which would indicate to Breville that it had been opened and void the warranty.

After playing with the grind/dose/tamp - I am able to pull double shots around 9bar at 35 seconds (using the preset double shot). What grinders are you guys?

i use the parameters on the black cat espresso site:
temp 200f
dose 18-19 grams
time 23-26 seconds plus a 5 second preinfusion (i set my preinfusion pressure at 70 percent)
volume 36 to 40 ml with crema

so..reset your double shot to 38 ml or so...i run water with a scale under the shot glass to 60 ml  by default
weigh out yor ground beans
tamp at 30 lbs. i use an espro tamp
and all should be good

I just got a BDB, but I'm a relative newcomer to espresso (I've used a rocket a bit, without too much trouble).

So far, I've been having a really tough time pulling anything like a reasonable shot on the BDB. I can't get the machine above 3 bars of pressure (I hit 5 once).

I have a Baratza Preciso - I've seen people recommending settings of 9-10, so i started there. I've tried as low as 2-4 though. I'm using the stock portafilter, and am tamping about as hard as I possibly can. Just trying to get unreasonable denseness to start.

I've tried weighing out 18g for dosing. I've also tried the cleaning disc in, and I get 10.5 bar.

My understanding is that with the Breville portafilter, you shouldn't be levelling out with your finger - the recommended dosing is over the top of the portafilter, right (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu-kBGhKyx0)? This is a bit different for the Breville than other portafilters/machines? Or is this where I'm possibly going wrong?

I get screen imprints on every shot. Don't know if that matters or gives clues.

I've burned through about a pound of coffee without getting anywhere so far - I'm using beans from a Peet's coffee and then a Starbucks, so they're not uber fresh. I'd rather not hunt nice beans if it's not necessary while I'm trying to get in a reasonable range.

Does such a low pressure usually mean I'm doing something wildly wrong? Or is it often just one small thing that makes a big difference?

Any thoughts on how I can get pressure up here? I'm not going to worry too much about fine tuning until I can get in the real of sanity first (I assume that's a good idea). I'm getting pretty frustrated at this point, but maybe this is just a part of the normal learning process.

grind and/or freshness are your problem.

old beans require MUCH finer grind than fresh beans--AND--the precisio might not be able to grind fine enough to handle old beans.  the vario can grind fine enough, even with old beans, not that i recommend using old beans.

in the mean time, as long as you have old beans, you might use the double-walled-double-sized basket, continue dosing out 18.0 grams, and do NOT knock any off with your leveling technique.  make sure you brew with all 18 grams in the basket. set your grinder as fine as it will go...

...and report back to us what you get.

Huh, that's not what I was expecting to hear at all. From what I was reading, I thought the precisio would grind as fine or finer than the vario.

I'll try the double-walled basket, but I'm really hoping to get at least a promising shot from a single-wall basket. Sounds like you can't use the precisio + single wall + old beans? That's kinda surprising to me...

I'll give it a shot and report back.
