Got it up to 7bar! Pressure started at 3-4, bumped up to 7 at the end, 25seconds.

Yeah, it's not there, but it's a lot closer. And I've got one more grind setting to go.

I think I'm closer to believing it's more the beans than me. I'm just a bit surprised that getting Starbucks espresso beans off the shelf at a Costco would make it so hard to produce good espresso. I knew it would be worse/harder, but I didn't think it would be *that* much.

Still wondering if most of the issue is me, but I notice that no one else with a precisio seems to be down in the 1-2 range (mostly in the 9-10 range).

Also started more aggressively tapping the portafilter before tapping, which may have helped.

since you're in california, (you didn't say if you were in southern cal), and you mentioned that you shop at costco;  a dirty little secret:  many if not all costco's here in socal roast their own in-house brand of beans right on the premesis.  IF you can get to know their roasting schedule, you can come in and pick up beans still warm in the bag, (practically).

i don't know the precisio, (i have a vario).  but if it has say, 40 or 50 settings or more, then going from setting 9, down to setting 2 on account of old beans does not sound at all unreasonable.

did you use the double-wall basket?  IMHO, they exist _precisely_ for the scenario you have chosen for yourself:  old beans.

Is this true for most Costco stores in the USA and are these in-store roasted beans sold only under the Kirkland brand?

A couple weeks ago I bought a Dual Boiler from Amazon, which arrived sporting a serial number starting with 1149. I loved it, looked great and made great espresso (who could ask for more) but it suffered from a small leaking problem. When brewing under pressure, the hot water dispenser would drip water into the drip tray. Not a huge deal, but I called Breville to report the problem, and also to ask about the brewing pressure, which would occasionally go as high as 10 or 10.5. As soon as the tech heard about the dripping problem he immediately offered to swap it out with a new one.

I received the replacement just a couple days ago, and it seems to work flawlessly. Brewing pressure, when I do everything right, is exactly 9 bars, and there's no dripping from the hot water dispenser. Also, the serial number now begins with 1205, so it would seem to be from a significantly newer batch. The only differences I've noticed are: 1) The portafilter now ships without the plastic insert. 2) There seems to be a change to how the brewer ramps up to full pressure after the pre-infusion. It seems to be more gradual.

Anyway, great customer service from Breville, they really seem committed to resolving issues quickly.

Hmm... my hot water dispenser also leaks when brewing under pressure... didnt think it was a big deal, but I will call and see what they say. My serial also began with 1149.

Also, I notice when using two shot glasses, the one on the left always has about 20% less volume... my machine is level and I even tried an empty shot - the left has less water...

Bought my double boiler about a month ago and have been experimenting, mostly satisfied overall here!  I'd like to get a naked portafilter tho, BrevilleUS seems to be out of stock and nobody else seems to carry em online.  Any leads where i could buy an official breville one or which off brand works best with brevilles own basket packs?

How about this one?

Will that fit?

Can't find any bottomless 58mm portafilters at all direct though Amazon, would prefer to order through them since I have Prime shipping but any legit source works.

On the naked here is the response I got from Breville USA a couple of weeks ago:

"Thank you for contacting Breville USA- we sold so many so
quickly that our entire supply went within 2 weeks. I don't yet have an
exact time of arrival on replenishment; however, it will likely be
towards beginning to mid June/July at the earliest. "

Ugh, sounds like I might want to go 3rd party then.  I've tried to figure out what ones are compatible and fit without leak but it's been hard to track down...

Back several messages, Phil McKnight posted a link showing how challenging it could be to adapt a portafilter made for another machine to the BES900:

If non-naked PFs are available from Breville USA, and you can find someone with a milling machine, that might be a better bet than trying to adapt some chrome-and-brass portafilter.

Ah I had seen that pic on his Flickr but didn't know the story.  Guess I'll get on the waiting list then....
