I know , I know I should buy a better machine. This is my first machine on my journey toward espresso perfection, it has been serving me fine for now until I can afford my next machine. I have de-pressurized the portafilter, and was doing fine, getting decent crema, I recently got a new Rocky grinder and have gone through about 3/4lb of espresso beans. I just decalcified the machine on the weekend and I am now finding that my shots are tasting burnt or grainy. I have not changed the grind selection on my grinder any thoughts? I was thinking that maybe I had residue in the grinder that was contributing, so I cleaned it and the problem has persisted.

It sounds like you may be picking up some residue from the boiler. You may want to descale the boiler again letting the descale solution sit in the boiler for a while before flushing. Then when you rinse the boiler you may want to use at least two full reservoirs of clean water to make sure you are getting all of the residue out of the boiler, lines, and the group head. Almost forgot... some residue may be trapped behind the group head screen. Remove the screw and drop the screen to see if that is a possibility. Either way, descaling again might not be a bad idea if the boiler was that nasty. You may also want to soak your portafilter in something like Cafiza to get rid of any residue that may have transferred during shot pulling. It's not a bad idea to do this regularly (soak the pf).
