Espresso: rancillio silvia

Subject: new rancillio silvia not working out of the box, any tips?

Hi,

I just bought a Rancillio Silvia. Right out of the box it does not seem to be working properly. So disappointing! I set it up, filled it up with water and followed the instructions on pulling water through before trying to make any espresso. Only a couple of drips of water come out of the frother. Nothing else at all.  It seems like, to me, that the tubes are just not pulling any water. Is there something really basic I could be missing? I've attempted to call Rancillio tech support with no luck at all.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I just fired up my new Silvia for the first time half an hour ago -- it started to pull water through the steam wand in about 15 seconds.

I don't have any great advice for getting your pump primed, other than continue to try to reach tech support. Did you buy directly from Rancilio? If not, try the company that sold you the machine.

But two pieces of advice:
- Be careful not to run your pump without water for very long.
- One you get past the priming issue, make sure you warm your Silvia up for 1/2 hour before using it. That's not in the manual, but it's essential.

Hi and welcome.
A easy way to prime the pump is with a bulb baster such as you use on a turkey.

Just fill the baser up and push water into the pick up tube, as you turn the pump on. The boiler holds about 6 oz of water and the rest of the system is about 4 to 6 oz total on the high guess side of things.

You should be up and running in no time.

make sure both hoses are in the white water reservoir.  Is the pump making noise when you either press the water button or brew buttons?

sometimes the pump one way seal gets stuck when dried off and although pulsating does not draw any water, professionally you blow compressed air in the pump via sucking tube, domestically you fill your mouth with water and blow water in sucking tube while activating brew button: it works

1 - both hoses in water
2 - hot water valve open
3 - vessel under wand
4 - turn power on
5 - turn hot water switch on
6 - Listen for sound of pump. Water should flow out of wand.If pump starts sounding good, then in a few seconds sounds like it is laboring under pressure, without turning any switches off, turn on brew switch. If no water from either then turn off all switches and close hot water valve and:
A - take longer tube out of reservoir (the tube with the slit end).
B - Use a turkey baster, large hypodermic-style syringe, super-soaker, or other suitable source of low pressure. Fill with water and place in the removes hose from step A.
C - Repeat steps 1 through 5 above and pressurize the hose with the device in step B. The idea is to force water under some pressure into hose.
Ca1 - If water seems to begin going into hose, turn off hot water switch and place hose back in reservoir.
Ca2 - Turn on power and turn on brew switch. Leave on until water flows from group
Cb1 - If no water flows from group in a few seconds, call seller.

Thank you everyone!!

Both hoses were in the water when I tried and the machine was making a loud noise.

I will try manually putting water in the hoses ASAP and see how that goes. I will let you know how it turns out - Thank you so much for all of the advice!
