I am putting together an email now. Here is the auction

The auction states, " Also, a video of this machine up and running will be posted on YOUTUBE (which will enhance your buyer protection plan).." If that was not the machine you received that should be sufficient to get your money back if that is your wish.

I think your machine is of similar vintage to mine but yours has less wear.  The graphics on my brew switch is worn off and the water switch is faded.  Only the steam switch looks new.  I drink straight shots and I temp surf.  I've got to install the PID.

I think your portafilter is an upgrade. The number on it looks Rancilioesq but does not match the filter which came with mine.  My OEM filter is a 20-112-030.  The portafilter which you have looks like what my bottomless portafilter was made from.  I can't tell you the number of it as that is the part which was machined away.

If the machine cleans up and does not have much rust and you paid a price which is commensurate with its condition I think you did OK.  The light in the switch is no biggie. Try to get the seller to pay for a new switch and your labor to change it.

After you settle with him, you should be able to pop the switch apart and change the little neon bulb in it.  An NE - 2 should work fine and they are dirt cheap.   Click Here (www.jameco.com)

Alright, so the machine arrived and interestingly, the machine is not the same one as featured in the video.

Here are a few pictures I took:

If you compare those with:

There are a ton of differences: inside, less things are heat wrapped (which was pointed out as a good thing), the steam wand is different, the Silvia sticker/logo is missing, and the portafilter is different. None of those things are necessarily bad, but it makes me wonder if the machine I received was actually 'refurbished' as stated. On top of that, the machine was pretty dirty, like the shower screen, for instance. And when I first ran it, lots of brownish water came through. Another thing that makes me doubt it was actually refurbished.

Finally, there is also a problem with the machine. The boiler light never comes on. It gets hot, but the light never comes on. This is obviously an issue if I want to temperature surf -- and be aware of when the machine is warm enough to use. Is this a common issue?

How would you guys suggest I handle this with the ebay seller?

First, save a copy of the youtube video for your records: http://saveyoutube.com/
Then, notify the ebay seller and request a refund.
When you return the machine, make sure a signature is required on the other end as proof of delivery.
If the seller gives you any trouble, file a claim with ebay: http://pages.ebay.com/coverage/index.html

Refurbished, to me, means that the unit was dead but the re-seller got it running again.
I'd rather have a non-refurbished machine. One that was taken care of right from the start by the original owner. Or, one that was very lightly used by the original owner.
In the future, look for descriptions that say things like, "We never use it." or "I am upgrading, and selling my well-cared for machine." or "meticulously maintained" or "barely a scratch on it, except for the drip tray" etc.
Pride of ownership, it's a good thing.

Does anyone have suggestions on a good espresso machine?  How is Rancillo?  I'm looking for one but not sure what to get....

Thanks,

Daniel
