Ive had two of these machines, the first one I don't remember it having a shim, this one has a shim under the portafilter gasket that makes it hard to get the portafilter to lock, I replaced the gasket thinking it might be too hard to compress, no luck. Now I am running the machine without a shim, the portafilter locks, shot pulls great but halfway through it leaks... It did not leak with the shim in, but the prior problem of gettin the basket locked in place is just as agrivating.
Anybody know if this shim is required?
Is there a Special magic way to get the gasket to seat in properly, I've replaced them before without this problem...
Other ideas?

I have never seen a Gaggia Classic - or any of the old Gaggia machines with the same boiler - that had a shim under the group gasket. You are talking about the thick gasket that goes down into the groove around the group head, right? The gasket should sit just a little bit "proud" of the groove - so it sticks out about 1 mm past the edge of the metal edges of the groove. If yours sits down deeper than that without the shim then it must be the wrong gasket.
Someone may have replaced the group gasket with the wrong size and used a shim to try and make it work. Or you may be overdosing the basket.
I pulled the gasket, it was wet under it, and a little dirty, so i cleaned it up, dried it off and put the gasket back in, put the machine in steam mode for a few minutes to help the gasket maybe seat itself...
I actually thought it might be my basket, nope still does it with a new one, i'm just throwing parts at this i guess...
