It's warm to the touch but not scalding.

Hello Everyone ... just joined this excellent site and need advice please   ....   I foolishly posted this as a new thread, when it would have been better in this owners thread - so I've copied it here because I think it will reach more BES900 owners. My apologies for not working that out in the first place.

I want to buy the Breville BES900 because a major store near me has it on special for $1199 and it seems to give so much for the price. I've researched quite a bit on this site and it looks like the machine for me ..... but it will be my first coffee machine.

My only concern is that I have no choice in my kitchen but to put it directly below overhead cupboards. There is only 30mm ( inch and a quarter ) clearance between the cup warmer on the top of the machine and the underside of the melamine cupboard/shelf where a microwave sits.

Can anyone please tell me ...... just how hot does the top of the BES900 get in use. Can you put your hand on it and leave it there ? Has anyone actually measured the temperature of the metal plate on top ?

I cannot find any recommendation from Breville about how much clearance this machine should have above it when in use.

I'm worried a hot machine might eventually damage or warp the chipboard above it.

Any advice would be appreciated ............... many thanks ........... espressomonster

I don't think you will have any problem. A big advantage of the BDB is you do not have to leave it on all the time. It warms up very quickly ( 6-10 minutes) and will go into idle mode after 30 minutes or so and automatically shut down after an hour or so. So, it should not produce enough heat to cause problems.

I believe standby time is 1 hour and auto off is 4 hours.

Thankyou to the posters who replied  ......   I appreciate it ...............

It seems I need not worry too much about heat from the warmer at the top of this machine ........................

................  So I plan on buying a BES900 this week.

It is very nice indeed to know this forum is here and is so helpful  ..............

Cheers for now ...................... espressomonster

A thought for Phil on the Breville team:

The warmer plate must use quite a bit of electricity, but not everyone uses it.
Why not make it possible to turn it off from the menu.

Or, alternative question:
It looks very simple to disconnect the wires from the heater plate.
Will this trigger codes or will the machine just work without it?

Like you I have very little clearance.  I keep a couple of small esresso cups and the portafilters on the warmer and everything just stays nice and toasty.  No issues, no worries.

I never even realized there was a separate warmer plate!!  Just assumed the top was heated by waste heat from the boilers.  I'd also like to turn it off, as I never use it for warming.  The top of my machine is 2.5" below the underside of the cabinet above it, and there seems to be no interaction at all

Na. You're fine, espressomonster. It never gets that hot. Good luck with the new machine!

Why didn't anyone else think of that? That's brilliant! I also warm cups with hot water anyways. Good lookin' out, JJC.

I highly doubt that the top is warmed independently.  Aluminum is a natural conductor of heat and heat rises, as we all know...So I'm assuming natural convection from the boilers is the source of energy...I could be wrong :)
