It's time for me to descale my system for the first time, and it's been a month or two since my last backflush. Is there a preferred order in which to do both of these this weekend?

I can't think of a reason to do one first over the other. I'd probably clean the grouphead/backflush first just because, but don't see a real compelling reason to do it this way.

Agreed, it really makes no difference, they are different operations and do not affect the other. I likely would also do the back flush first if for no other reason than that the flushing of solution through the boiler will be more water to flush the group head of detergent but then, the detergent will be gone quickly so .... it really does not make any difference.

And I'm one of those obsessives that does a backflush every day (or every other day), so am perplexed by the question. Backflush first; but not for any particular reason.

On my Gaggia, and probably most / all others, what gets sent out the solenoid during a backflush comes from the boiler. So I'd do the boiler first, backflush 2nd.
But agreed, whatever, just as long as you make sure it's full of fresh water by the time it's all over with.
