What do you consider a "great grinder"? What beans do you use? If it HAS to be espresso, a used machine (and a lucky buy at that) will be the only choice. A stovetop espresso maker (moka pot) is the only choice new. If GOOD COFFEE is the priority, get an Espro Press.

If you are patient, you might find a used Gaggia in that range, on CL or the auction site.
Some of the models are basically the same inside, plus or minus a few features, such as a OPV and 3 way valve. The older it is, the cheaper it will be, but also more chance it needs an overhaul. But, gaggias are fairly easy to work on, and there is a lot of info and a dedicted forum for them on the net.
Also, mypressi just went out of business, so you can now buy pretty cheap on the auction site. Just be aware that they are no longer supported, and it's more work to get a good shot out of one. You need to preheat it, and it's harder to dial in, especially if you don't have a machine to help do that.
But, I have used a PID'ed Gaggia Classic, and a Mypressi, and both are capable of pulling good shots.

no one's going to laugh at you for using those beans. However, it's pretty universally accepted thought that you will likely notice a huge improvement when you switch to high quality, freshly roasted beans. good luck with your setup!
