Hi guys, I bought a BZ02 recently and the group gasket had turned to plastic. I hastily replaced it without really cleaning the gasket area out, so I primarily blamed that hastiness for leaks when I put in a new group gasket. I just got a new one from Vanelli's today, took out the last one and scrubbed around with a brush and also ran a small screwdriver around to make sure there were no remnants that might affect how level the gasket sits. Popped the new one in (flat side towards machine, bevelled side towards PF), warmed the machine up and let it sit for a good 20-30 minutes.
The portafilter gets tight around 6 o'clock (perpendicular to the machine), but can be tightened another inch or so. I pulled a shot that was probably a 30-35 second double, 19G of grounds. It leaked just like the last gasket, frustrating! Any other tips or ideas? The first gasket came directly from Bezzera. I really don't want to throw in the towel and sell it on eBay, but I'm nearly frustrated to that point (and have too many machines).
Hey Ben. Maybe it's different with the Bezzera, but with an E61 I believe the beveled side of the gasket goes against the machine and the flat side goes against the PF. Is it possible you've installed the gasket upside down?

Thanks for the quick reply! Well, in my forum searching I saw people recommending both. I also looked up instructions for Livia 90 gasket install, and wholelattelove recommended flat side towards machine. Gah, if I got it upside down I wonder if this gasket could be saved? I really don't want to order another gasket by itself.

I had exactly this problem with my BZ02 last year. I tried swapping out the gasket, but it didn't make a difference on the leak. Then I tried the thicker one, but no joy. Super frustrating. Turned out to be the portafilter. Switched it out for my single spout spare that I use with the blind basket, and haven't looked back. I actually prefer the single now. And no more leaks.

Big thanks to fellow Portlander GlenO! I was able to get the gasket out without ruining it, and flipping it solved this headache. I only wish I hadn't cut the last gasket out, as it was still new and probably would have been fine.
To reiterate, I really hope Bezzera and Pasquini owners do not get thrown off by WLL's incorrect instructions to mount these gaskets flat side up. The gasket is a bit thicker than I'd like, but it'll get better over time. The only thing I'm finding now is that I'm getting some drips on my counter where the 3 way valve must be violently overflowing the shallow drip tray. Anyone found a fix for that small mess? I think adjusting the OPV valve down would be a good start, need to read up on that.
I second this! I got thrown off by WLL's directions too. I posted here my frustration here: http://coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/grinders/414318 I'm gonna send their customer service department an email to see if they'd be willing to take that down.

You can adjust the OPV. Be careful when doing it and make small adjustments. I vaguely remember doing that years ago for purposes of improving shot quality. I'm not sure what effect it had on the splashing. I still get some drops on the counter and the drip tray is entirely too small, but I have to wash my counter really frequently anyway to keep the amount of coffee grounds somewhat in check :)
