Hello, all. So it has been 6 months after "upgrading" (or downgrading when it comes to Microfoam) from my Gaggia Classic. The espresso is amazing, but after years in this hobby and 6 mos on the Vetrano, I can't get Microfoam. it was so much simpler with the Gaggia. I tried different tips, plugging up holes, different pitchers, techniques - everything. It produces way too powerful steam, kind of like trying to drink water from a firehose.
Before I sell it and pick up a Breville dual boiler, this is my final call for suggestions from fellow Vetrano owners. Any ideas? Also, is there any way to mechanically dial down the steam?

Before throwing in the towel or trying any other unnecessary voodoo products like special wand tips or whirling pitchers, you might want to try these suggestions if you haven't already. I recently took a barista class with Heather Perry at Klatch Coffee and was using her Nuovo Simonelli Aurelia which is "slightly" more power than my single boiler thermoblock machine to say the least...LOL.
1) Start with the tip way deeper in the milk than you're used to before turning on the steam. Initially I was blowing huge bubbles on the Aurelia since I can usually start introducing air at the surface straight away on my single hole machine with no issues. Once you have full steam then move the wand towards the surface to introduce air.
2) Introduce air only till you barely start feeling warmth on the pitcher. This happens extremely fast so be ready to sink the wand in usually less than 10 seconds.
3) Don't worry about any bubbles you introduced in step #2, just focus on rolling the milk and the bubbles will incorporate naturally. Experiment moving the wand around the cup to see where you can get maximum rolling. Since you have a 4 hole tip point you can point straight down rather than angled with a single hole tip.
These three tips got me making microfoam in less than three tries on a pro level machine so I'm sure the Vetrano should be a little more forgiving. Once you get used to the steaming power you will probably feel how you lived so long without it!
