Posted Wed Aug 15, 2012, 5:05am Subject: looking at a La Pavoni Pub 1 off CL, need some help on appraising it
I stumbled across this unit on craigslist, and have talked to the owner, she is willing to sell it at a price I deem reasonable. Question is, how do I evaluate this machine to decide if it is in working order? I run a gaggia now, but this is a different animal. Any way that I can test it without a water hookup (can I fill the boilers manually and test it out). I am an equipment technician, so I have tools (including a multimeter), I just need to know what to look for.
Also, it looks like its missing the portafilter...where is a good place to purchase parts?
Any help is appreciated. Serial number is 2000 if that helps any, or if anybody could date it for me.

HI, There is no way that I know of that will let you fill the boilers without pressurized water of some sort. If you can't hook it up, all you have to go on is outward condition and the apparent care it has had, allow in the price for room to buy repair parts if need, like the PF.
I have bought machines from CL like my Brazilia two group but the cost was under $100 so the risk was low, just use caution and your best guess and judgement.

I will remove saftey valve and anti vacum, use one hole for a flashlight and one for your eye and look insde for scale, even better if possible remove the HE and take a real look inside the boiler, then after reassembly t connect water line plug machine in and check for the rest of the functions, autofill, pump grouphead etc etc crossroads sold a lot of then all over the states and some are possibly still in good shape and just to say it as well we have parts

I have a Pavoni Pub 1V--it's a 1995, 110v and plumbed in. You will find that if you take off the top panel (4 screws, really easy), the date of manufacture is labeled inside.
My dear friend is an espresso tech, and I asked him the same question you did. Here is what he told me.
Look at button panel. If the membrane is worn or yellowed a lot or cracked, then be a little more concerned. The brain is one of the 2 most expensive parts.
The other expensive part is the pump. Here's how you check it: Make sure the switch is turned OFF. Then, plug in the machine. You are going to turn on the machine for 5 sec. and then turn it off again. This quick on/off will not harm the pump, even if empty. What you want to hear is the click and the pump turn on.
If #1 and #2 are OK, then most everything else can be fixed with parts and labor. Also, if you move forward, you can contact me for parts vendors, an owners manual in pdf and a blow up parts diagram. Regardless, you will need to order a new set of seals and a screen.
I really love mine. It is fairly easy to work on--pick up a set of metric wrenches and metric allen wrenches.

Perfect, I have what I need to intelligently look at this machine now. I checked out the link for stefano's site, and he has the parts that I know I will need, so that is gravy (or should I say...crema). I will post back up when I get a chance to inspect the machine.

it is a good suggestion however the machine in the picture is a semi-auto no dose pad
Sounds like you are associated with crossroads....any idea of the year of manufacture? What's your website for parts?
I did tech support for them several years ago before opening my own co.
