I went for a Gaggia Classic and also purchased the Silvia steam arm to modify it for use without the panarello. Should be here the middle of next week. Thanks to everyone for the discussion.

Just wanted to update everyone: the Gaggia Classic with Silvia steam wand mod really seems to be fitting my needs. I'm still getting shots dialed in, and just installed the updated steam wand today, but it's been fun so far and my family loves drinking the learning process. And for the record, if I would have gone with a machine any bigger than this one it would have been too big and I would have had to send it back. The Gaggia Classic is basically the same footprint as a cheapo Mr Coffee, only taller. Thanks again for your help!
