There is truth to the flat vs conical affecting the taste. But I believe the Vario W is worth the extra money and I think tasted better than the conical, but then I like chocolate. YMMV Either will give you a better shot now and when you upgrade over a cheapo grinder.

The W part is definitely worth the extra, if it's as good as the Esatto is with my Preciso. Press button, get right amount of coffee for shot to within .1g ... :)

Mine came (secondhand, about 2003 vintage) with a non-pressurized baskets plus a "perfect crema device", which consists of a rubber disk and washer that sits in the portafilter under the basket. With this in place, you effectively get a pressurized basket. Without it, you get standard non pressurized.
I've re-purposed mine to act as the flow regulator when measuring the water temperatures with a thermocouple on both my Gaggia and my HX machine as a poor man's SCACE device.
