I have a new Quick Mill Anita coming tomorrow. I have read almost everything I can find on temperature surfing and so it might seem I should not need to be asking this question, but I excuse myself on the grounds that amongst what I have learnt is that TS is very machine specific and I have not found any Anita specific articles that give details. I know that the E61 group head on the Anita is very forgiving and maybe many think nothing more than a bleed of the boiling water is required. Chris from ChrisCoffee in his Anita video (see it here http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/home/espresso/anitanew) does not do a flush at all, but may well have done so off camera or he may say it was not the first brew. The Anita manual says a cooling flush with the portafiller removed is necessary before the first shot of a session, but implies by silence that there is no need to wait for a temperature recovery. Some opinions I have read say of HX machines that a cooling flush that goes x seconds beyond the water dance with a y seconds recovery is required. If this is so does any experienced Anita owner know what x and y are?
I decided I could not afford a dual boiler machine and I will not add a PID, so don't tell me to do so, but I might try reading the head temperature with an infra red thermometer; is that likely to give a good result?

Since the boiler of a HX machine is on steaming temperature, the water in the HX line tends to overheat when the machine is left idling. That's why you need a cooling flush to bring this superheated water down to brewing temperature. After that you can start pulling shots. Even at consecutive shots brewing temperature will remain relatively stable. After waiting more than about 5 minutes in between shots you will need a new cooling flush. So there's no need for a temperature recovery with a HX machine.

A PID won't even do any good with a HX machine, because you cannot influence brewing temperature directly. A brew head thermometer can be helpful though.

Nobby hit all the high points. In short, relax, you did well, you will like the results. HX flush is not temp surfing, a HX machine will be very consistent if you just let it be so.
