Im going to make this real simple. Do all the tantalising features of the Breville make it a better machine than the VBM? Does it make espresso that tastes as good as the VBM?
After a recent disaster, I am looking to do this 'right second time'.
I want a machine that will last, pull one helluva good brew and sit next to a Mazzer Mini and make the best of the quality grind this machine offers.

Breville is not a machine that you can service yourself, you will have to send it in to get fixed and I believe "ever so many" shots. The jury is still out on the long lasting reliability of Breville as a brand. Domobar Super (rotary) will have more off the shelf items and will have more people including yourself be able to service it. It has more metal in it as well.
Long lasting would mean less proprietary electronics and metal over plastic, IMHO. This seems like a no brainer to me.

I don't think that I have much to add to this thread, but the old saying goes, you do get what you pay for.
I've heard a lot of good things about the Vibiemme machines. I would have bought one myself, but it is too deep for my kitchen counter. You may want to check the specifications of the machine and make sure that it'll fit yours, leaving at least 2 inches of room in the back of the machine for a plug.

A DB doesn't make better espresso than a HX machine, it just works differently. So the the Domobar Super with the rotary pump is IMHO the more solid machine of higher value. It's probably also offers the better longevity, because it's a prosumer machine, whereas the Breville is an entry level home market DB. It's for people who want to brag about having a DB without being able or willing to buy a R58, for example.
However, if it's a DB you want and since money is no object, the Vibiemme Domobar Super PID might be an alternative.

Thanks for all your replies. I should have perhaps said that I am comfortable with the pricepoints of each machine.
You have all echoed my own suspicions and helped make my mind up - many thanks. Domobar it is.
I think the Breville dies have excellent features - perhaps one that would be useful to me is the wake-up timer.. I will have to buy a separate timer to fire the Domobar up in the morning. But, point taken... :)

Good call. I was very happy with the results from by BDB, but I am now much happier with the peace of mind that long term I know that my mini Vivaldy can be fixed by me, with the assistance of a technician that can figure things out. I understand the features your talking about. The BDB is very intuitive to use compared to other machines and incredibly temperature stable. But you get over it in a couple of days.
