I was just reading over preparation instructions on Intelligentsia's site regarding Black Cat, and I just got my digital scale so I'll really start trying to make my shots more consistent. I noticed they recommended 23-27 second extraction time with a 5 second pre-infusion. I have a Silvia without a PID, and was curious to know if I should be aiming for that time by skipping the pre-infusion, if I should plan on extracting for 28-32 seconds normally, or if there was any way to do your own pre-infusion on a machine like the Silvia?
Would that be possible or even beneficial? Perhaps hit the brew switch on for a couple of seconds then off again, then after a few seconds pull the shot normally? Any thoughts?

Very difficult to preinfuse with a Silvia. Preinfusion should be done with lower pressure than normal extraction, and you can't really do that on a Silvia. You're more likely to just damage the puck and increase you chances of channeling and uneven extraction. You're better off just playing with the shot timing until you get it where you like it. I never cared much for Black Cat, so it's hard to give you specifics. There's a recent thread started by jwoodyu about coffee bookmarks, and he posted a great link to a post by guru Jim Shulman on how to adjust a dose and grind to your taste.
