Not sure this photo is terribly useful, but if you are really into the nuts and bolts, you might enjoy seeing it. I took this photo on a machine that has been warmed up for several hours without the portafilter in place. I didn't try to show temperatures because, with a reflective surface, it wouldn't have been all that accurate anyway. The shower screen is obviously pretty cool, but remember the portafilter was not in place. Probably would be better to use a good surface thermometer, which I don't have.

Dean, Cool picture! Would love to have that tool available. This is exactly how the brew head is designed. There is a shower block (diffuser block) that is made of more insulating material than the outer brass housing. This does cause the screen to be a bit cooler but it has such a small relative mass that t does not take too much energy to heat it up to temp. The shower block is made so it absorb less heat from the portafilter and the water passing through the shower block.
