Espresso: Cuisinart EM-100

When I turn on power for Cuisinart EM-100 after a few seconds the pump starts thumping, same sound as when I turn the lever to "Steam". Even though lever is set to "neutral" position, thumping noise continues for minutes. I tried running Steam for minutes hoping it would reset or clear itself. I also tried making coffee, running hot water through steam wand, decalcified with vinegar/water.
What causes a pump to start thumping continuously no matter what position you turn lever to?

It sounds like the pump is running non stop. If you have any of the 3 year warranty left then send it back for service if not count yourself lucky it lasted this long.
If you like espresso then it may be time to upgrade the machine and grinder. Those machines are best suited as wedding gifts that are never used.

Thanks for the reply. I called customer care and was told I can take the machine to any California retailer with proof of purchase, and they can exchange the machine. (within 3 year warranty period) The instruction manual actually states this on the last page, but I will first call the store where I bought the machine and talk to the manager about this return/exchange policy to see if they are aware of it.
I have used the machine at least once almost every day for about 2 years, so it has held up pretty well.
