I suspect you have the pressurized and non-pressurized baskets confused. If you don't have the black pin in the bottom of the portafilter when using the pressurized baskets, the Classic makes a mess. The Classic comes with 2 pressurized filter baskets (a single and a double) and 1 non-pressurized double-shot basket (at least that's how mine came in the USA).
In the image below, 1 & 2 are non-pressurized and 3 & 4 are pressurized. The black pin is required with the pressurized baskets, otherwise you will get the spraying.
Ahh, yes, good point. I was thinking about a repair type problem. Yep, the baskets w/ the single small hole are intended to be used w/ the little plastic piece stuck into the portafilter itself to tame down that flow.
