Doc from cs I presume? Haven't seen you here or there for quite a while. Your mates over there seem to be dropping like flies... or at least the observed pressure from their bdb's is anyway. :) Sounds like you're sitting on a quite a storehouse of useful information.
1: some of us are no strangers to materials selection when it comes to gasket materials. Could you elaborate further for us? You use the word outcome like a medical doctor. If so, you can see why some of us are interested in prophylaxis when it comes to the 3-way valve in our BDB's. After a year of trouble free use, blokes like me and Richard/bubbadude and jjc/jim are feeling its time for a look.
2: firmware update? Not sure how to go about getting that done. Pull the logic board and send it out for a re flash? Send for a new board with the current version already loaded? Not sure Breville would go along with either approach. Not even sure they have repair shops here in the USA. So far they've been replacing warrantied BDB's outright. I wonder what the odds are that they would even entertain the idea of upgrading firmware on a perfectly working machine?
It seems that Breville is replacing the O rings with a flat gasket, so the thing to do is to get the gaskets from Breville. This raises the question about other changes that Breville may have made to accommodate a new seal system. Is the fitting any different, or have they simply replaced O rings with gaskets?
Re-flashing the firmware is clearly not an end-user procedure, and I don't notice any firmware bugs. I would need more information to bite on this one.
Doctor also mentioned flying portafilters, a problem I haven't seen.

i would bet that getting the seals from breville will be as much of a non-starter as getting firmware flashes. more so actually. breville is a large, savvy international business and they HAVE to know how hugely different the civil liability picture is in our country (tolerance for outrageous frivolous law suits), compared with the other western democracies where their civil courts are much more common-sense-based, including their home country. selling gasket kits to end-users here in the USA is just BEGGING to be sued.
Breville, to an american customer: "here is your replacement seal kit. you are now free to sue us if _you_ screw up in the slightest way".
hope i'm wrong. but in the mean time, if changing o-rings is as easy as it sounds, even if they are good for no more than 6mo to 1 year, i'm ok with that.
I don't know if anyone has verified that the Breville uses a Parker valve, however the internal seals are not O-rings. I think the o-rings that are being discussed are those used to seal the valve to the connector(s). So replacing the valve is apparently not necessary.
