Posted Tue Jan 8, 2013, 4:32pm Subject: When did Salvatore start using E61 Group head OR How can I tell if I have an E61
Hello,
New to boards, new to espresso. Have only owned a cheapo machine for 1 year (bday gift last year) and after having it for 1 year and it's still on the counter and I still use it every day we upgraded. I purchased a used Salvatore Semi-Automatic Famosa. I emailed the company and gave them the serial number. They told me it was made in 2003 and was a semi-automatic and that was all the info they had on it.
So, here is my questions....
When did Salvatore start making E61 grouphead machines?
Can I tell by just looking at it if it is an E61 grouphead?
Why do I want an E61 grouphead? (Yes, I'm that new to this - I know that I SHOULD want an E61, but not really sure why - is it because the parts are easy to get or because of the temp control? or both?).
What should I do to this thing to when it arrives? Other than try to make an espresso with it...Do I need to check any gaskets in the grouphead or anything? I've never owned a machine that you COULD replace parts of the grouphead so I don't really know what to look for.

btw - if you look in the ebay pictures there is a screen/gasket laying in front of the machines. Someone did ask about this and they said that is just an extra part and they machine is working and has a screen in place.

The hump on the front panel is a dead giveaway for an E61, I think. E61 groups have a telltale stem that extends straight down from the back of the group, which a lot of manufacturers try and artfully cover with metal plates. Nice find, I'm kind of envious now.

Ok - yes, it definently has a hump in the front. I was looking online about the way the E61 groupheads are cleaned and I noticed they pull off versus a screw, is that something specific to the E61 grouphead or do other groupheads have a pull off gasket/screen?
I feel like I got a pretty good deal - I guess that remains to be seen when it arrives. It was either this or invest the same amount in a brand new Silvia (anyone else noticed the crazy prices of used silvia's??? $380 - $450 for a V2!). We just weren't ready to take the plunge into a $2000 investment but my husband really liked the machines with the $2000 features.
