I'd love a machine that I don't have to "mod." I'm a tinkerer at heart, but it pains me to see threads about "necessary" mods to something like the Gaggia Classic - a machine I've considered to be an upgrade from mine.
So what tier is above the mentioned SBDU units (standard go-to machines)? And what about after that?
Seems to me that you would be a perfect candidate for the Crossland CC1. You are not making a lot of back to back drinks and only occasional milk drinks, so I don't see the need for a heavy duty HX type machine.
Take what I write with a grain of salt because I do not have a lot of experience, but I have done this analysis for myself several times over and I keep coming back to the CC1 as the best option for light use. It is cost effective and offers several more advanced features you cannot get from an sbdu.

Jason. Why are you ignoring termoblock units? At the CC1 price point, they seem to fit an unfilled niche: people like me that want quality espresso, but are not heavy enough users to warrant an HX of DB type machine.

Is the CC1 better that what OP is using, clearly. I believe the Gaggia Classic is also, and stated that early. Is the CC1 a cost effective "intermediate" machine?

I could be wrong, but seemed that OP already has eyes for the upgrade and is looking for "intermediate" machine. You are not touting CC1 as your intermediate, but as your niche. I think that we are trying to answer that narrow question, not better or niche.

I re-read the original post. That makes sense. I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to 'waste' money on intermediate upgrades (that's my upgrade theory).
You could look at the CC1 as a trial end point. It offers enough to be a solid step up from the OP's current setup with the possibility to upgrade to a heavy duty machine in the future if required.
