Another random question, but I've always noticed that my first shot in the morning seems to flow very slowly on a grinder setting that was fine the night before. Is it because of a cold PF? Just wondering.

I wouldn't think so, but why do you use a cold PF? Don't you heat up your machine with the PF locked in place? The reason for the phenomenon you discribed might be that humidity is different in the morning.

I never bothered leaving the PF in place because 1) I rinse it in the sink with warm (but not hot enough) water in the sink between shots (pull 2-4 each morning) and 2) I'm terrified my roommates will accidentally run into it. Any ideas? Thanks!

when you empty your pf does the puck look expanded at all ? also how long are you preheating your machine ? maybe water temp not hot enough yet. Try pulling a blank shot instead of rinsing in sink. this should make the pf closer to temp.

Easy experiment. Turn machine on pull a shot, measure time, volume, and weight of liquid. Warm machine for 45 minutes at least with out the PF in and with the same grinder setting pull a shot and measure the time, volume, and weight. Now put PF in and let it warm for 10 min or so and test again. This should tell you the answer to your question on your equipment and your routine.
Not having the PF stabilized in temp to the machine means it is cooling the shots pulled from it to variable amounts. Having a PF locked in and stabilized, just like the group, will allow for the benefits of more precise temp managment. IMO it has nothing to do with flow rate just as a 195f shot flow the same as a 205f shot with same dose and grind but extraction changes.

If you don't want to store your Portafilter in place store it on top like I do most of the time. Then at least it is warmed up a bit. I used to warm up my naked all the time by running water through it before the water dance then drying it then water dance then pull shot. Now I don't bother and I can't tell a difference and I don't see any choked shots in the morning. If I used a whole portafilter I would worry it would pull away the heat from the shot as it went through the spout but because I use naked I am not all that concerned. If I were you, I would try the blind basket first thing to see if that changes things. That would more than heat the group head.
