I had that grinder when I first started and it isn't even a real burr grinder. Best use of money is like advised above. Spend it on a good grinder, some fresh beans and take the pressurized attachment off the portaflter. Yes the grinder is that important.

You've got a bit of a budget. Go naked on the PF from Seattle Coffee Gear for your Athena. Those things have excellent resale value if you upgrade later as well.
