Since we're on the topic of transformers, and this will not apply to the OP, if you're going from 110v to 220v or vice versa, and your machine requires 1000w of power, a 1000w transformer will NOT do! I would go a minimum of 2000w, which is what I currently have, and at that size they're absolute monsters in terms of size and weight.

I would add that the delta between 100 volts in Japan and the 110/120 in the US is minimal, and you should not need a transformer at all. Your machine may draw a bit more current and take a little longer to heat up, but it should not damage things.

Are you moving yourself, or is it on the company dime? The ideal is a converter that's rated at least 3X the wattage of the device, which puts you in the 3KW bracket. These can be had relatively cheap, but are relatively large and heavy, so expensive to ship.
If you're going to Tokyo it may be better to wait and head over to Akihabara, http://www.gojapango.com/tokyo/akihabara.htm , and give yourself a day. If you have geek tendencies other than coffee you will go nuts. Also a good place to pick up translators and dictionaries, or just about any other appliance or electronic device. Several square blocks of small independent shops and department stores. Also one of the places where the cosplay kids hang out.
