I realize this has been covered in a few threads, but there seem to be various methods.
I won't be using my machine for about a month so I think now would be a good time to descale. I pulled the mushroom the other day to replace the valve and was shocked by the barnacles plastered all over it. I guess after 6 years it's time! I do run a softener so maybe it's not horrid, but I'm sure it's high time.
Since I have a lot of time, what would be the best method and is there a good tutorial anywhere?

Mario or anyone please,
I've been advised that I shouldn't descale my Vetrano via bucket and citric acid thereby running the solution through the whole system. Better that I simply open up the top of the boiler and siphon out whats in there and put solution directly in.
Can someone please direct me to instructions for this? I have no idea how to get into the boiler (there are several ports on top) and no idea really how to do the whole process.

When I descaled mine, I emptied the boiler and put the citrus liquid directly into the boiler. Just like Kat and Gail showed on the Seattle Coffee Gear videos. Check it out.

I was under the impression that our fairly soft water combined with the water softener I'm running, would prevent scale. Pulling the mushroom however negated this impression!
