Does anyone know why the lever on my Rocket Cellini would be very difficult both to lift for brew and to shut down? It was fine one day and then the next (after a few days of not being used) it's completely different. It takes a lot of effort to move the lever. I appreciate anyone's help and advice.

As a first step, you might want to dissemble, clean and lube it. Randy Glass (frcn) has a great how to on his site www.espressomyespresso.com it includes both step by step instructions and a demo video. It's a quick and easy job too. I think the video runs maybe 3 minutes, start to finish.

it could be that it was not lubricated at the factory, and possibly sat around in stock for a while. In any case, some Dow 111 and a bit of time will (should) do the job.
He doesn't really say, so i made an assumption based on the available information (which was limited). I sort of hoped he might reply with...oh it's 7 years old, or i bought it last week. because without that bit of information, it's easy to give a wrong diagnosis, or bad advice. If we don't even know how old the machine was, what else have we not been told?

I had a similar problem with my Rocket a couple of months after buying it new a year ago. The lever was sometimes very difficult to raise, with a metal on metal scraping sound. Like yours, the issue was an intermittent one with the lever operating smoothly most days and the problem only occasionally popping up. I tried lubricating the cam as others have suggested but with no luck. However, through trial and error, I discovered that the problem I was encountering was not with the lever itself but with the micro switch the lever depresses, which in turn causes the pump to turn on. I discovered this by holding the switch in (with the machine off) with a flat blade and finding that the lever could be raised and lowered smoothly without any issue; remove the flat blade, and the scraping sound / difficulty in operating the lever while it pushed the switch in returned. I remedied this by coating the switch very lightly with lubricant (I used Dow Corning 111) and working the switch in and out numerous times with the flat blade. Problem solved....I have not had an issue in the last 9 months.
While I was trying to find a fix for this problem, it was suggested to me that the brew switch may also need to be adjusted further into the machine to resolve this issue (i.e., slightly increase the space between the switch and the back of the brew lever). I haven't had to do that, but it should be a simple adjustment. Since you got the machine at CSS, their customer service (which is terrific) can provide you with instructions.

Took the lever apart and lubed the cam and gaskets. Boy, that thing was jammed in there. It's like the gaskets inside the unit clung on to the lever, so when I was turning the lever I was turning the washers in the unit too. Anyway, after a little frustration loosening everything up, everything is back to normal. Thanks for the help, everyone.

I just did a lever and cam lube on mine a week ago, and as GlenO stated, if teh extenal cam is operating a switch, be sure to put just a think coat of lube on that as well. It does help.
