I've owned my current Gaggia Classic for about 3 1/2 years. Had various espresso machines for over 10 years now. One thing with ALL the various machines I've had over the years is that I need to keep a small cup under the frother when I am BREWING espresso--cuz the wand drips during the brewing. I am a solid cappuccino drinker, so use the machine just 1x per day & have about 4 shots of espresso, the about 7-8oz. of steamed milk with froth. Is it pretty typical for home espresso machine's frothers to drip during brewing of espresso? I take beautiful care of my machine, and it had the steam valve replaced 2 1/2 years ago. I am not mechanical. It doesn't appear that the drippy tube is affecting my shots. Thanks.
I had one for five years. You should be descaling that if you arenít and also back flushing. You can run descaler through the steam arm it sometimes helps. It can be easily replaced if you want to. Use the Gaggia descaler.
If someone is NOT mechanically minded, is the steam valve difficult to replace? How do you do it? Can you end up screwing up the entire machine if you don't install it competently? This was just replaced about 2 1/2 years back. Do they go that quickly? I'm not a huge user of my machine, unless once a day (1-4 shot espresso cappa) is considered large useage....
I started doing that after I had to remove my 3 way valve and clean it from lack of back flushing when I first got the machine (used). I am not a mechanical engineer, but I don't believe backflushing is any more stress on the machine than a few more shots a day would be and your machine should be able to handle that. It is up to you how you treat your machine.
Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.
