I'm finally thinking of buying a PID for my Silvia from Auber instruments. Since I also froth a bit I wanted to get the model which tries to control the steaming temperature as well. I'm not sure about the model with pre-infusion though. It's a tad more expensive.
I believe that you could use the brew switch instead of the button on the PID controller, but that is based on what I recall reading. It would be easy enough to unplug those wires, spade connectors. Obviously you are doing the install so will understand the wiring well enough to go back and forth. You could bring a switch or plug junction to the outside back of the machine.
Pre-infusion and slow pressure ramp up has had a beneficial taste effect for me. But on any vibe pump machine, I'd consider just adding a variac (or possibly a dimmer) to the pump. This also gives you manual pressure profiling throughout the entire shot.
