Is it possible the bad shots are ones where the hopper is almost empty? I find if there are not enough beans in the hopper the pull is not as consistent as it should be. (With the vario W and the k30. )

Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.

hi, the first shot last night was with an almost empty grinder. after the first shot, i re-filled the hopper but the next 2 shots, even adjusted finer, still ran a bit fast. in your experience, does the grinder still need recovery after re-filling the hopper? do most grinder experience this trait?

i have used multiple bags of the same coffee in the past few weeks. typically, i put half of the bag, let it run to almost empty and then refill the hopper. i do notice some inconsistencies but i can't remember if those are because the hopper is almost empty. although, the discrepancies i notice are typically just a few seconds difference per pull and nothing that ever required me to go to setting 1 on the Forte.

this morning, leving the Forte with it's setting from last night of 1Q that gave me barely 20 seconds was pulling 27 seconds with the single basket at 10 grams. i did two pulls with the single shot basket. i divided the double shot in to two pulls because i didn't want to waste anymore coffee than i need to since i am doubtful of what will come out of the grinder.

I don't switch back and forth between double and single baskets.  Pick a basket and stick with it. You are making your life more complicated than it needs to be.

i typically don't switch a lot either but there are a few times i really feel the need to use the single basket. and from my experience , pulling a single and a double back to back typically give me the same pour time with 16 g in the double and 10 g in the single. and for what it's worth, it is always the double basket i'm using when i experience these sort of problems.

Maybe you should try a naked portafilter to see if your inconsistency/gushers are caused by channeling/spritzers.
Silvia has a bit of reputation for being difficult about puck prep.
