Hello, All.  I am the proud owner of a QuickMill Vetrano HX and Baratza Vario.

Lately, I have been noticing a subtle metallic taste in the background of my shots.  I don't think its the water because I have a whole house filter for turbidity, and a water softner plumbed in before the water line to the machine.  I also tasted the water coming out of the machine and tastes fine.

I read on HomeBarista that dull burrs can be the culprit.  Took my grinder apart and noticed the ceramic burrs are smooth to the touch - no resistance whatsoever when I drag my finger across them.  Also, in the past I had a rock that wasn't filtered from the beans and got into the grinder - I'm thinking it could have dulled the burrs severely.

What do you guys think - should I try replacing the burrs or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Thanks, but no.  I only notice this taste at home. Just a strange taste - can't get that perfect tasting shot lately.

Taste the water coming out of your machine.  It could be that.  If not that leaves the beans or grinder.

Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.

Mario - how long have you owned the machine? Have you done anything to it that coincided with the metallic taste (i.e. backflushing with cleaner chemicals, etc.)?

Thanks, guys.  No, nothing new to coincide with the taste.  And the water tastes find coming out of the machine,  so I'm going to order the new burrs today.

Changed the burrs in my Vario and all is well now!  Much different (better) taste.  For those of you that hadn't replaced your burrs in a while, I'd recommend it.

The Vario has ceramic burrs that will last a loooooooong time for a home user, how long have you had it, as you joined in 11'? The ceramic burrs are rated for up to 1k pounds of coffee if I recall. Must of been the rock that did damage

Hmm.

I don't believe the reason is for metallic taste is due to the worn burrs but I guess I can expect to find out once they're worn...In, say, 20 years?

Actually, this is from Home Barista - "Metallic Taste: Recently cleaned machines or brand new ones can have this. The taste is eliminated most quickly by flushing more after cleaning, or for new machines, pulling a lot of shots and dumping them. Dull burrs are another cause. Finally, a failure in the water treatment resulting in almost distilled, low mineral water will cause this."

Guess that fight I had with the rock was the culprit.
