Well, I pulled the trigger last week.
Sur La Table, a local fancy kitchen store, accepted my Francis X1 return, no questions asked, after 8 months. Although the machine did not work out for me (goopy pucks , inconsitent shots, often sour, lustiing for an upgrade), I will certainly keep purchasing stuff there. They really mean it with their unconditional warranty.
I called Chris (and Mary) at Chris coffee and, based on your collective advice about Chris and his advice to me, ordered: Isomac Tea, Rocky Doser Grinder (fin mod will probably happen soon), Hearthware Iroast. His is modifying the single portafilter for pods (emergencies only), and the double for a single pour. I would have considered a Mazzer but they are too tall for my cabinets.
You may be interested to know, they are about to get new machines in. They made a deal with a manufacturer (new to US) to import their machines. Similar to Isomac but some improvements such as insulated boiler and better low water shutoff. They will sell for something like 1200+. I decided to get the Tea so I woul not have to wait, it's a good deal, and I was a little worried about being the guinea pig for the first batch.
The stuff arrives tommorrow and I have the day off. I will be a caffeine buzz brain by the time the day is over. Bluebottle (local roaster) was out of espresso when I went there so I bought some Cafe Trieste Espresso roast today. When the Iroast is running , I will roast Vivace beans in the house, order Black Cat, reorder Monkey Blend and generally speaking, drive myself nuts. I may order some Bluebottle tonight for Tuesday delivery.
I have a 57mm tamper from Reg Barber that I had ordered for the Francis. Chris said I did not have to be anal and get a 58. I probably will anyway because I won't be able to help myself. Hmmm... Reg Barber again, Vivace Ergotamper, ?????

I think that there is normally about 1.5mm clearance between the basket and the tamper,. you would have 2.5mm (approx. 0.1 inch). Not terrible. Just do the Staub tamp.
I heartily echo this! Chris was great with me too, and I'm glad to have equipment from him. And as the owner of an Isomac I can assure you that you made a good purchase! I get so much enjoyment from my espresso machine...
Surely, you can use the 57mm tamp, and if you feel the need later then get a 58mm.
Let us know how it all goes! You weren't clear about when you would start roasting, but once you do start be warned: you may never be satisfied with store-bought or online roasted beans again. (The difference is unbelievable)

Thx, won't fit. The Reg Barber Base is the female and the handle is the male, even if the diameters were the same. I went back too the Reg Barber website. "Resizing" is $15 and shippinng is $15 minimum, total $30. If both are Canadian $, then it will be around $23. Not bad, a new Reg Barber tamper from the various mail order places is around $45 including shipping.
