ShortBlack, Tell the person who made the knock box they can be proud of that work ! It looks like the the crossbar comes out to get the plastic liner out ? If it does I'd remove the crossbar and not use it ...that will keep that piece pristine to always compliment the whole box. Grab a piece of broom handle that just fits in the slots and place a piece of rubber hose (automotive heater hose is pretty tough) over the broom dowel. The rubber being just larger than the slot will keep the dowel located left/right ... done !!! Replace the original when visitors come over !!! <wink> Imagine a matching espresso trolley made to the same quality ...Wow !! Anthony

Thanks for the tips. The bar is removable to get the plastic tub out but the ends of the bar are flared so I'll slit a piece of hose and wrap it around.

I built one, but I no longer use. I simply used a loaf pan, made a simple wooden frame and bar, and used some quick-dry stain around the wood frame. It was nice, but when I bought Anita, I wanted a nicer knockbox to go with it. I went with this oneHere. It looks really nice, and is plenty durable. But, for me, its way too small. Probably going to get an In-Counter Chute once I set up my new espresso bar. Im trying to find one which I can mount flush with the counter, so I can also sweep coffee grinds into it. Or, the new CafeLat knockbox, which I think is the nicest looking knockbox aside from Reg Barbers. Im probably the only person who puts this much thought into a box to save garbage for an extra day. :)

A knockbox only adds to the cleanup time in my opinion...at least for home use. I knock mine out in the waste can that has a liner in it. I then rinse the PF in the sink and put it back into the head and run water through it and wipe down the screen after each use. It is easier than having to clean out the grubby knockbox and all around it where grinds land. I bought a nice one from Chris when I purchased my Duetto but its never been used...still in the box.

I built one out of some extra wooden fence I had laying around. Don't worry, it's untreated wood. http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2932/knockbox2.jpg It works great, and I've had it for a couple of years. The only thing I wish was that it was larger because I'm kind of lazy when it comes to emptying it. PS: I tried to rotate it, but for some reason, imageshack doesn't like my rotated one. Who knows. Just rotate your head or monitor 90 degrees. ;)

A quick trip to Home Depot and your local restaurant supply store and $20 will have you a knock box in no time. I have made my own and it's quite useful. I like projects and wasn't going to pay $35 for a knock box. The box is 6" deep and has plenty of room for those spent pucks. It also nicely elevates my bean storage container so I don't drop beans all over the counter when I add them to the hopper each morning. You will want to look for a steam tray or hotel pan at the restaurant supply store. I was even able to find a matching cover for mine. Source out some rubber grommets, a long galvanized bolt and matching nut and a reinforced hose of some type. The hose wraps around the bolt and protects your portafilter. I have a longitudinal cut in the bottom of my hose to make removal and cleaning easier. This way I never have to take the bolt out of the knock box. I have been using this for 4 years now without fail. It makes the process of getting an espresso in the morning far more easy and enjoyable.
