Hi Loring,

Congratulations, this is impresive.  This is inspiration to me since the frame of my Silvia is going to have to go to the powder coat shop.

Now that you have demonstrated your Rio guru status, I have a question for you.  Will a Feama portafilter fit the group on a Rio?

I have access to a nice two group Rio at work and the chance to buy a Feama portafilter which looks a whole lot like the Rio filter.  I also have access to a Bridgeport milling machine at work.

You can probably figure out what I have In mind.

Phil

Hello Phil,

I have access to a nice two group Rio at work and the chance to buy a Feama portafilter which looks a whole lot like the Rio filter.  I also have access to a Bridgeport milling machine at work.

This is totally a guess but I think CMA and FAEMA my be like FORDS and CHEVYS. The grouphead on the Rio is some type of thermosyphon but appears nothing like a Faema. The group bell looks more like a Rancilio.

The Rancilio portafilter handle diameter is to large to even fit into the bell.
However the baskets are interchangeable.

The portafilters that came with the machine are not as heavy as the commercial model I bought for Sylvia.  Talking to vendors I got the impression that there are not many choices for the RIO.  Please correct me if someone knows better.

This doesn't answer you question, I have no Faema parts to compare.

The Faema portafilters are not the same as the Astoria/Rio portafilters.

Note that the position of the ears are different. Close, but so are the other thirty types of portafilters out there.

Congratulations on the rebuild!  I hope I can come across a similar setup.

FWIW, that machine is an older version of the Astoria Junior I used at my last job.  It pulls a pretty nice shot.  I ended up getting a triple basket from our coffee supplier, and the shots were downright syrupy.

How can you say generic!!!!!! Its is the standard that all other machines are compared. It is a basic boiler design with heat transfer. Basic fill and brew valves and standard portafilter housing. I love that machine. If it ever gives you a problem let me know. I repair these machines on a daily basis.

Hello Mikey,

I didn't mean it it a bad way, from a novice point of view it seemed pretty generic as a single group HX commercial machine design.

Thank you for the offer of advice.
My temporary hook up to my laundry basin makes me think I am cold at the grouphead. (had a TC in the portafilter basket). Boiler pressure set 1.3 to 1.5 was giving me about 193 degrees at the top of the puck.  Wondering if pressure gauge might be  off a bit.  Also notice water has to travel in tubing about 12 inches from outlet of HX to grouphead, seems water would cool quite a bit traveling that far.
Since I took the skin to the paint shop I am a little leary of hooking it up, as  the doserbox would be hanging in the breeze. You probably know better than I what those little babies cost.  A week or two and I will have her docked to her new home.

I ended up getting a triple basket from our coffee supplier, and the shots were downright syrupy.

The triple sounds good. I was blessed with getting 3 portafilters along with the machine, none in very good shape, but think I will try the bottomless trick on one of them. I think any triple basket would fit then?
Or should I stay with the CMA triple Rio basket?

Thanks for advice

I remember the portafilter being pretty deep already, so the first triple basket that our coffee supplier sent me fit just fine.  I have no idea if it was a CMA triple, Faema triple, or La Marzocco.  Gift horse, et al.  Our supplier gets parts from ESI, though, and they import the Rios, so it may have been a stock part.

Thanks for the replies Loring and Terry.

I guess I'll just let the Feamea handle which I saw on e-bay be.  I was thinking I would have my personal bottomless portafilter for the Rio which I use at work, but I sure don't need a $15 piece of brass which I can't use.
