So I've found that my personal favorite espresso drink is a nice strong Americano with some half/half or heavy cream in it. Does this make me a bad person? I sometimes feel guilty about doing this, particularly if the barista is watching me after I get my drink ;)
I drink my drip coffee the same way, with just a little bit of cream.
Latte's are okay, but way too milky for me. Also, I've been on a low carb diet for the past ~5 years, so I can't really drink milk anyway. I've had a few breve lattes (fewer carbs than a normal latte), but I don't particularly like those, either: still too milky, and then I feel like I'm just drinking fat :)
Anyway, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking some unspoken rule about this drink. Does anyone have suggestions of other espresso drinks I might like? I've tried straight shots a few times (at one local place and then a Caribou) that I've been rather disgusted by .. far too bitter, etc.
I've got a grinder and espresso machine at home so I can try things out without it costing me too much, too :) (on another note, I'm planning to try my hand at roasting soon, too). Maybe I could try ordering some really high quality beans and doing straight shots like that. We'll see.
The only thing worse than a bad person is a good person with a bad conscience.
C'mon Nick. These are beverages meant to be created and imbibed for your pleasure.

Enjoy yourself, man! Go...American-O

I do cringe when i hear someone ordered a raspberry egg nog latte around christmastime, but there are exceptions to every rule!

Well no one ever really makes me feel foolish, I just feel like I'm being 'watched' sometimes. Then again, maybe I'm just paranoid ;) Or, more likely, the coffee shop isnt busy and the barista is just bored :)

Dear Nick,
I am in exactly the same shoes as you. I am not a big fan of milk drinks and try to stay low carb. For me it's either straight espresso with nothing in it, or Americanos with cream and sweetener. So far, I have not noticed any baristas looking at me askance.

I put milk in everything. Occasionally, I'll have an espresso neat, but I prefer the flavour of the combination of the espresso and the milk over straight espresso or black coffee.
Americano is the way to go - I'm on No. 2 today and have two football games to get through.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one to put cream in my american. For that matter, I'm glad to hear that other people actually drink americano ... I don't recall ever even hearing anyone else order one!
On another note, I was rather proud of myself earlier today. I was working on making an americano, but pulled a shot that looked so fantastic that I just had to try it neat .. and I actually liked it! I downed about half of the doubleshot before making myself a mini-americano with the rest. It was with some black cat beans ... definitely good stuff, but at $15/lb shipped, much too expensive for this college student :)

You'll see all kinds of "rules" associated with consuming your espresso or coffee.
"No milk drinks after 10:00am"..."Straight espresso is the ONLY way"...
I look at those rules like an old saying from a few years ago. "Real men don't eat quiche"!
My reply to that (and rules about espresso)..."Real men eat/drink what they damned well please"!
The only rules you need to worry about are the Golden rule for making espresso. How you like to drink it is your choice. If anyone gives you more than a short, good natured ribbing about it, then they're being impolite and showing their immaturity.
Enjoy your Americano's with cream. Geese...It's 11:30 and I'm going to have another Latte!
