I'm wondering if I can get a 58mm basket into my portafilter, which would not only let me squeeze more coffee into every shot, but it would open up my tamper options greatly. I've gone bottomless so height is not an issue. Alternately, I wonder if there's a 58mm tamper out there that mic's under 58mm and would fit my basket, my Espressivo is almost a mm undersized.

I was surprised to find that my baskets are close to 58mm. Could someone help me out and throw a mic or vernier on the outside of their 58mm basket and 58mm tamper?

CraigA posted some good measurements in this post, and he measures a standard LM double basket at 57.5mm. I know the ridge would mean I probably cannot use this basket, but if a 58mm tamper fits the LM it should fit my stock basket right?

Here are the numbers:
Espressivo 57mm Tamper:     56.896mm
FF! Double basket ID:            57.886mm
                         OD:           58.928mm
FF! Portafilter ID:                   59.334mm

Found out here that 58mm Reg Barber tampers are right on the money at 58mm. That would give me 11 thousandths of interference with the baskets I have right now, damn.

I guess my next question would be: who gets the tightest, workable fit with the 58mm Reg Barber? That would be the basket I need...

How'd you manage to go bottomless on a FF! ?  Did you cut the bottom out yourself?  Is there a supplier for a bottomless FF! PF?

FWIW... i use a 58mm tamper and we use OEM LM ridged baskets. it requires very consistent dosing (within about 0.2gram) and distribution but it works. despite the extra difficulty, i prefer it to using a 57mm, which i find results in degraded extraction.

I did it with a Dremil
"Francis! Francis! Crotchless! Crotchless!"

You could get it done at a machine shop for $20 or so

Bravo!

Sorry to bug you, I thought I had seen your post before, but I made the mistake of searching for "naked" instead of "crotchless."  Such are the vagaries of espresso-porn terminology!  (Really, though, how could I forget, "Francis! Francis!  Crotchless! Crotchless!?"  It may be the best thread title ever.)

So all I need is a spare porta filter and courage.  Lot's of courage . . .

Hey no problem, that's why we're all here  :D

I would rank the Dremil near the bottom of preferred machining methods; but I happen to love my Dremil. I spent a couple of hours on Saturday opening up the PF all the way to accommodate a triple basket ;)

John Courage will do nicely, thank you very much.  Or perhaps a nice Samuel Smith's . . .

Thanks for the links.  It looks like Aabree Coffee is offering the FF! PF for $39 here.  I'll add the info to the other thread.
