Isn't it funny how quickly the lack of a coffee produced by your faithful companion can turn the clouds dark .... my Gaggia Evolution has worked fine but now although steam is produced it doesn't stretch/steam the mlk.
I have cleaned the steam wand, descaled the machine, cleaned shower screen assembly and group. Also cleaned the spring-loaded valve behind the shower screen - it did have some white scale on the rubber part and I know that although we use a water filter we do get scale in the water still - but this did not solve the issue ...
How can I fix this? Would a complete boiler disassembly with descale and valve replacement solve it? Has a thermostat died and is not heating the steam enough? I'm stumped and thirsty!

It sounds like your steam thermostat has died. Does the 'OK' light come on in steam mode and if you pump water out in this mode, is it much hotter than brew mode?
Also, does water pump through strongly if you turn on the pump and open the steam valve?

Thanks for the ideas Greg - I checked all these and they functioned fine.
Then I received an email from Shriro (Aussie Gaggia distributor) - they told me to adjust the internal fitting in the frothing nozzle by 3mm .... and the problem was solved! So simple and so elusive.
Turns out that this adjustment altered the steam flow and subsequent back pressure ... which solved the froth/stretching issue ...
