I think it's an interesting gadget, but I've never needed to actually measure my tamping pressure.  There even seems to be some good evidence that pressure over 30 pounds does not really make much of a difference.  The important issue is to be consistently good at tamping.

I have one and like it.  Between the Espro and the naked pf I was able to get my tamping down in 2 days.  The Espro also has a nice hefty feel to it.

I have the espro and really, really like it.  Eliminates one variable in my pulling shot.  Tested out on a calibrated scale at work and got 30 lbs pretty much on the dot.

Pretty sure it's a torque wrench mechanism fitted into a tamper.  As accurate as you need to be.

I'll chime in too.  I have this tamper and I love it.  So folks talk about it as a training tool, which seems to imply that once you're done training you'd move on on.  To what?  I mean a tamper isn't really a high tech tool and the Espro is egonomic, heavy, and generally well made.  I had been using a solid SS tamper and calibrated myself on the bathroom scale as is often recommended, and that was fine.  But as time goes on, and I have read this several times in other threads, you tend to tamp harder and harder over time.  I don't know how it would hold up in a commercial environment, but I don't see the same problem there as with home users.  I mean, how many shots do you pull a day?  Personally I pull two doubles in the morning and a triple in the afternoon, and on occasion a forth in the evening.  I don't think that's enough to remain consistent day after day.  Plus I think your personal state or mood will cause some variation too, ie a really stressfully day might make you tamp a little hard w/o realizing it.  With the Espro, that personal perception and sensitization is eliminated.  Eliminating that variable is very useful, so grind is were I make all my adjustments, not tamp.

This plan is so bad it must be one of ours!

I love mine.  Extremely well made and consistent.  Moved up from a Reg Barber solid aluminum.  My next variable is temp control.

I like mine a real lot.
I used to overtamp terribly and i am sure this tamper has helped me a lot.

If you pick one up don't forget to let the people at 1st line know that the Coffeegeek site inspired, confirmed, etc. etc your purchase from them.

Happy Tamping,
myron
