Examine CLOSELY to see the water leak path....watch for it over the basket edge. It has to be there before it can get inside. (Where else would you think it can come from? Think carefully about the leak path and flow of the water....)

just wanted to mention that Jon's awesome. I picked up 3 ridgeless baskets from him (14g, 18g, and 21g) and am looking forward to trying them out next week when I (hopefully) get some fresh beans. I get to try my first triple ristresso...yay!

well....it's still leaking, even with the new baskets. the leak occurs with both regular and bottomless PF. what's weird is that when I backflush with a blank disk, it does NOT leak; it only leaks during espresso extraction. the leak does not start until several seconds after starting the pump, and it seems to leak from two or three locations. I tried turning the PF harder to lock it in better, and this helps slightly, but not completely. scrubbed the gasket thoroughly. What could the problem be?

If you really cranked the handle over (don't be scared, it won't break! {;-)) & it's still leaking., your grouphead gasket it too old/hard. Replace. How old is the one in there Alan?

do you mean the space where the gasket goes? I cleaned it to what I thought was an acceptable level...the gasket fit in nicely, and seemed to be in place...you think I left over gunk or something, and this prevented the gasket from providing a good seal?

I'm not Jasonian, but yes it should be spotlessly clean. Any grunge, coffee particles, greasy coffee oils etc., could & will provide a pathway for water to leak under the flat sealing surface up in the grouphead where the group gasket sits (interface between the two) & operating under 9 plus bars of pressure.
