The jury is out...I've read a couple accounts on back flushing a Silvia. One guy said he did it regularly for like 3 seconds. Someone else, (maybe on another site) wrote that it's not a good thing for Silvias. As the manual for the Silvia is pretty much an unpacking guide, I was hoping I might get a definitive answer on whether or not I should back flush. Thanks!!

I don't know what trial you're watching, but this jury announced its verdict and went home ages ago . . .

Here's an article:  http://technocosm.org/espresso/rancilio-silvia-backflush.html

And here's a video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGk7FfLpEHc&feature=related

I've got a Silvia and I've done periodic backflushing for over 4 years, and Silvia is fine, no problem from backflushing.

Absolutely back flush, as vigorously and frequently as possible. She'll either be really clean, or you'll break her, requiring an upgrade to a Vivaldi. Either one is a total win.
